My favourite exhibition makers, Swede Sofia Hedman and her husband Serge Martynov of Museea were at Art Miami this week with a Pop Up exhibition A QUEEN WITHIN: ADORNED ARCHETYPES. Presented by Barrett Barrera Projects, they featured a selection of work from the full scale exhibition, film & artwork of Comme des Garçons, Alexander McQueen, Rick Owens, 69, Iris van Herpen, Vivienne Westwood, Charlie Le Mindu, Pyer Moss, Chalayan, Minna Palmqvist, Gypsy Sport, Gucci and many others.
Hedman and Martynov’s Exhibition in Stockholm, Utopian Bodies – Fashion Looks Forward was awarded Exhibition of the Year 2015 by The Association of Swedish Museums, my interview with Sofia Hedman on Utopian Bodies can be read here.
“In storytelling, archetypes exist as powerful figures that consolidate
the essence of what it means to be human. Through female
archetypes in particular, we may glimpse the essence of feminine
resolve. Indeed, an iconic archetype such as the Mother channels
human empathy, while Mother Earth stands as a universal symbol
grounding us to our environment. For storytellers and artists,
female archetypes bear in them the capacity to forge deep,
emotional connections between the individual and the collective
unconscious, making them powerful sources of inspiration, as
well as vessels for our wildest fantasies and our deepest fears.
Metaphorically speaking, it may be said that every woman has
a queen within.” – Museea.
